Blizzard’s Diablo III players in own personal hell.

Oh, Diablo III first it was problems on launch day with overcrowded servers and error 37’s as far as the eye could see, and now your players are getting hacked left and right. No one is safe, not even my own father, to whom I gave the gift of Diablo III as an early Father’s Day gift.

Gold, gems, weapons, armor and other items are being reported missing by Diablo III players worldwide. Though Blizzard does offer an authenticator for sessions, it does not guarantee one will avoid having their hard-farmed booty taken from them by hackers.

This new issue also comes on the heels of the announcement that the in-game auction houses Blizzard was so proud of, will be delayed. No launch date has been set. Which means, more black market sales for the foreseeable future, making stealing your stuff relatively lucrative.

Hackers are exploiting a security flaw in Battle.net to get to the goods, via SQL attacks, and if your stuff gets stolen, you either start over or continue at whatever level your character is currently at.

In a statement to Kotaku, Blizzard stated “ Historically, the release of a new game — such a World of Warcraft® expansion — will result in an increase in reports of individual account compromises, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing now with Diablo III. We know how frustrating it can be to become the victim of account theft, and as always, were dedicated to doing everything we can to help our players keep their Battle.net accounts safe — and we appreciate everyone who’s doing their part to help protect their accounts as well.”

Following that with a rundown of their current (ineffective) security measures, and reminded Battle.net users that the authenticator is free, as well as providing a smartphone app and now SMS support.

Accounts are still being compromised, according to the Battle.net forums. Are you a victim; has someone you know had their account hacked? Let us know in the comments.
