Unexpected Gifts

NYE is my birthday, it’s always a little hit or miss in terms of going out night of, and usually plans are made for the first weekend after new years. I turned 39 this year so nothing ostentatious was in mind, the main gift I wanted was just not being the planner.

My husband not only delivered, he has overdelivered in the most lovely way. His surprise (just the location) was slightly spoiled, but honestly I still had no idea what we were doing, or who would be there.

The guestlist wound up being my beautiful, artistic, smart younger sister (30) and her partner Ash (who is lovely), my wildly talented friend Liza (whom I’ve known for 25 years), a homie since college, Jenn, (A burlesque dancing Oncology science lady; what a range!!), and a surprise appearance from college friend Rich, who just happened to be there!

We spent a dreary January Sunday filled with laughter and Boba, we played board games, caught up, and generally just enjoyed our company and surroundings. Joe was worried I’d be disappointed, I certainly don’t know how.

As if all that wasn’t wonderful enough, we had two other delightful surprises!

On my birthday, Kevin Smith’s comic book shop – The Secret Stash, posted a picture from an event I attended as their cover photo with me in it. I have an inkling as to who may have changed it, but either way, what a lovely thing to do. One reason I love Kevin so much is everyone I’ve met because of him has been kind, funny, and big hearted. (Save for one total whacko, we will not address her here.)

And finally, as we were wrapping up my birthday hangs, my brother-in-law Ash, handed me a flyer. A man is leaving Pennsylvania tomorrow, and needed to rehome a 2 year old tortoise shell kitty. On a whim (we’ve been looking at adopting a cat anyway, I’ve owned cats before) we decided to take her.

She arrives in an hour with food, and a robot litter box, to say I am ecstatic would be a gross understatement. She’s already named Raven, and I love all corvids but I also love DC’s Raven. I’ve given her a middle name of ‘Cookie’, this was my grandmother’s stage name for when she performed as a nightclub singer in the 80’s.
